Our Story
1959 was a very dark time for the Cuban people. It was a time of unimaginable loss where terror reigned. Most Cubans lost everything. The communist regime confiscated homes and businesses. Castro’s revolution campaigned to make everyone equal. He did so by changing the monetary system so that everyone became ‘equal’ and destitute overnight. Those who disagreed with the revolution were either jailed or killed. My parents left everything they had ever known behind to protect us and fled to the USA. We escaped with only the clothes on our backs. Our abrupt departure from our homeland was a matter of survival. I was four years old.
